DESCRIPTION

ACTION

MASTITIS / BLOCKED MILK DUCTS

Usually occur after the birth but can occur beforehand.   In Mastitis – the lumps are usually small and painful, often with red streaks radiating out from them.  It is usually the result of an infection.  Blocked milk ducts are caused or aggravated by wearing an under-wired bra or one that presses on the underside of the breast, or by pressure from car seat belts on a long journey.

Mastitis must be dealt with promptly to avoid infection spreading further so you need to contact your caregiver as soon as possible to advise you on how to get rid of the lump.  To help prevent blocked milk ducts you need to wear a correctly fitted bra.

LEAKY NIPPLES

It is quite normal for your breasts to begin to secrete colostrums from the fourth to fifth month of your pregnancy.

If the leaking is marking your clothes invest in some breast pads to slip inside your bra.

PROMINENT GLANDS IN THE AREOLA

This is a natural way of your breasts preparing for breastfeeding.

Should you be concerned contact your caregiver but no action should be necessary.

PROMINENT VEINS

Spider or thread veins are quite normal and often disappear after the birth.  They are caused by the action of oestrogen on the blood vessels.

If the veins bother you use a concealer make-up to help cover up.

TENDERNESS

Tender breasts are one of the early signs of pregnancy.  The tenderness is caused by stimulation of the milk-producing glands and, as the pregnancy progresses, expansion of the milk ducts as they prepare for lactation.

Wear a support bra throughout your pregnancy and replace them as your breasts grow.  Also try wearing a sleeping bra at night if you are uncomfortable.
