SPRAINS

A joint is sprained when it is twisted beyond its normal range of movement. Falls often cause sprains and ankles are particularly prone to this type of injury.

Signs

  •  Pain
  • Swelling and bruising

WHAT TO DO

  •   As soon as possible after the injury, put on a cold compress. Use an unopened packet of frozen vegetables or a plastic bag filled with ice.
  • Support the injured joint with a firm, but not over tight, bandage.
  • Rest the injured part for a day or two.
  • If a leg, foot or ankle was injured, keep it raised whenever possible.
