SPRAINS
A joint is sprained when it is twisted beyond its normal range of movement. Falls often cause sprains and ankles are particularly prone to this type of injury.
Signs
- Pain
- Swelling and bruising
WHAT TO DO
- As soon as possible after the injury, put on a cold compress. Use an unopened packet of frozen vegetables or a plastic bag filled with ice.
- Support the injured joint with a firm, but not over tight, bandage.
- Rest the injured part for a day or two.
- If a leg, foot or ankle was injured, keep it raised whenever possible.
