THE RECOVERY POSITION

The recovery position is a safe position that allows the patient to breathe freely and prevent chocking.

WHAT TO DO

  • Kneel beside the patient. Turn his head towards you and tilt it back, keeping the jaw forward in the open airway position.
  • Put the patient’s arm nearest to you straight along his side and his hand under his buttock. Put the other arm across his chest.
  • Cross the leg furthest away from you over the leg nearest you-at the ankle.
  • Support the patient’s head with one hand and with the other hand get a firm grip of his clothing. Pull him towards you, supporting his body against your knee
  • Bend his uppermost arm and leg so that he does not roll onto his face. Gently pull out his lower arm from under his body and place it in a comfortable position.
